Over 1 million New Zealanders are likely to visit their doctor or nurse over the coming months for an influenza vaccine. Advice from the National Influenza strategy group includes – “When you are assessing patients with flu symptoms, be alert for meningococcal disease”. People presenting for influenza vaccination is a great opportunity for healthcare professionals to identify higher risk groups for meningococcal disease and discuss vaccination.
With increased awareness of the risks of meningococcal disease people visiting their healthcare professional are encouraged to discuss if meningococcal vaccination is appropriate.
